Why it matters

Most falls happen at home — and most homes can be made safer

Aging in place means staying in your own home as you get older — and the right home modifications make that possible for far longer. The places we know best are also where small hazards hide: a slick tub, a step at the front door, a dim hallway, a railing that wobbles. The good news is that these are fixable.

A handful of thoughtful changes can turn a risky room into one your parents move through without a second thought. This is not about giving anything up. It is about keeping what matters most — the familiar kitchen, the morning routine, the neighbors down the street, the dignity of doing things your own way.

Our job is to make the home quietly support the person living in it, so independence lasts longer and everyone worries less. We start by listening, explain every option in plain language, and never use fear to sell you anything you do not need. Curious about what's possible? Solutions for common situations

Wherever you are, there is a sensible next step

Families come to us at very different moments. Here is how we usually help, depending on what is going on right now.

After a fall

A fall is often the wake-up call. We move quickly to remove the biggest hazards first — grab bars, a safer shower entry, better lighting, and steadier railings — so confidence comes back fast.

Coming home after a stroke

New mobility needs call for thoughtful changes. We adapt bathrooms, entries, and key pathways so daily routines feel manageable and one-sided weakness is supported.

Wheelchair & walker users

Wider doorways and a zero-step entry, roll-in showers, and turning room make a home fully navigable — whether someone uses a walker today or a wheelchair down the road.

Parkinson's & balance changes

Stable, easy-to-grip rails and grab bars, slip-resistant surfaces, and predictable layouts reduce stumbles and help with the freezing and unsteadiness that balance conditions can bring.

Low vision

Brighter, even lighting, high-contrast edges, and clear, uncluttered paths make it easier and safer to move around. A whole-home assessment is a good place to start.

Returning from rehab

Discharge timelines move fast. We coordinate quickly — often starting with a ramp or stair lift — so home is ready and safe the day your parent comes back.

Paying for the work

You may have more help available than you think

Funding for home modifications can be confusing. Here is the honest version, in plain terms:

  • Veterans: the VA HISA grant can help with medically necessary modifications — verify current VA figures.
  • Texas Medicaid: the STAR+PLUS HCBS waiver can cover Minor Home Modifications for eligible members.
  • Medicare: Original Medicare generally does not pay for grab bars, ramps, walk-in tubs, or stair lifts. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited home-safety benefits — verify your plan.

We help with paperwork; not medical, legal, or financial advice — verify current program details.

Common questions about aging-in-place remodeling

What does aging in place mean?

Aging in place means choosing to remain in your own home as you grow older, rather than moving to an assisted-living facility or nursing home. For most people it means making targeted home modifications — such as grab bars, a curbless shower, wider doorways, or a stair lift — so the home safely supports changing mobility and health needs. Studies consistently show that most older adults strongly prefer to age in place, and that the right home modifications make it possible for far longer.

Where do you provide home accessibility remodeling?

We serve the greater Austin metro, the areas south of Austin, and the Central Texas Hill Country. That includes Georgetown and Sun City, Lakeway and the Lake Travis area, Canyon Lake, Lago Vista, Bulverde and Spring Branch, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, Austin, New Braunfels, Boerne, Fredericksburg, Marble Falls, Seguin, Bastrop, and more. We are based in Dripping Springs and travel throughout the region for free in-home safety assessments. See all service areas.

Does Medicare pay for grab bars, ramps, or a walk-in tub?

Original Medicare generally does not pay for grab bars, wheelchair ramps, walk-in tubs, or stair lifts. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited home-safety benefits, so it is worth verifying your specific plan. Veterans may qualify for the VA HISA grant for medically necessary modifications, and the Texas Medicaid STAR+PLUS HCBS waiver can cover Minor Home Modifications for eligible members. We help with the paperwork; this is not medical, legal, or financial advice, so please verify current program details. Read our full Texas funding guide.

What happens at a free in-home safety assessment?

A CAPS-certified specialist visits your home, listens to your goals, and walks through the spaces that feel risky or hard to use. We look at entries, bathrooms, stairs, lighting, and floor transitions, then suggest practical options at a range of budgets. You receive clear recommendations and an honest written quote. There is no pressure and no obligation to move forward.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Live Oak Home Access is a licensed and insured, family-owned remodeling company. We are CAPS-certified (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist) and EPA Lead-Safe certified for work in older homes. We design with input informed by occupational therapy best practices and back our work with a written workmanship warranty.

How long do most accessibility projects take?

It depends on the scope. Grab bars and railings are often installed in a single visit. Modular ramps and stair lifts can frequently be completed within a day or two once parts arrive. A full tub-to-shower conversion or accessible bathroom remodel typically takes one to two weeks. We give you a firm timeline at your assessment and protect your floors and clean up the work area every day.

How much does an accessibility remodel cost?

Costs vary widely with the project and your home. As a rough guide, grab bars are a modest per-bar investment, ramps and stair lifts fall into the mid-range, and walk-in showers, walk-in tubs, and full bathroom remodels are larger projects. These are typical Central Texas ranges — a free in-home assessment gives an exact quote. Our Central Texas cost guide explains what drives the numbers so there are no surprises.
